VANGUARDS: 1/43 ROVER P4

This is the Rover P4, a beautiful model which has captured the distinctive shape of this car, from the era when cars did indeed have distinctive shapes by which they were instantly recognised. This vintage replica features the updated 1959 model. During the P4's 14 year history it underwent no fewer than 11 variants. Features include distinctive grille and its recessed bars, new style number plate and photo-etched chrome detail, the model is mounted on a removable plinth with a hard plastic cover. The model looks particularly smart in the deep maroon chosen for the initial release. Worth nothing are the seperately painted dividers in the rear windows. The radiator, in the characteristic Rover style, is fully chromed.

CORGI COLLECTOR CLUB MODEL FOR 1996, A LAND ROVER

Each year the Corgi Collector Club provides its members with a special model. For 1996 the chosen model is a Land Rover, using a casing that has not been employed by Corgi for some time. Indeed the opportunity has been taken to improve the mould. Finished in green, the model carries the Corgi logo and year ‘1996’ on the bonnet, number plates of CCC96, and plastic headlights. Perhaps the chance should have been taken of tempo printing (or adding by transfer) the familiar Land Rover badge. Shop here

POLICE 'VIGILANT' RANGE ROVER MODEL

In 1972, the first Corgi Range Rover model, no 461, appeared, a Police service ‘Vigilant’ model. Police service up and down the country had been quick to recognize what the Range Rover could do for them and several specialist conversations were conceived and constructed on the base model. The Cogi Vigilant was one of these, coming with simulated roller shutter doors in the sides which concealed the equipment storage. The roof box was fitted with moveable plated flood lights on each side with yellow lenses and a central blue beacon. A large white-on-black ‘POLICE’ sign was to the front across the rear in white-on-black it read ‘POLICE’. This one model was to become one of the highest selling for Corgi, nor surprising recording over one million sales.

LAND ROVER DEFENDER CHAWTON WHITE COUNTY

By the time the Defender was launched in 1983 Rover had made 1.4 million Land Rovers and the Range Rover had been in production for thirteen years; not bad for a model that had been planed mainly as a post war stopgap to be made whilst rationing was still in force. However in 1983 that stop gap model became a marque in it's own right and traditional Land Rovers were christened Land Rover Defenders and fitted with coil spring suspension similar to that used by it's more expensive cousin.

AN ANIMAL ADVENTURE SERIES: DAKTARIT

The original Corgi company never made another safari toy, but in 1998, new Corgi issued a commemorative Daktari set.No.07104 included the old 1/43 scale Land Rover, but the wheels are different, and the rear window in the cab is larger.

The black strips are bolder, as are the Wameru transfers, which are now on the pick-up sides. Included with the vehicle are very good models of Judy the chimp and Clarence with his glasses.

The box is particularly pleasing, with Daktari logo, Clarence artwork, publicity stills and photos of a Land Rover on Safari. Although it's not a limited edition, it may prove a little harder to find than its contemporaries. Buy it now.

LAND ROVER (LWB) SERIES I - RAC

When first produced between 1948-1958 the Series I Land Rover was used almost exclusively as a workhorse, a vehicle designed, manufactured and marketed o earn it’s keep. As such it found great popularity in farming, police, fire and other emergency services, the army, recovery services and utility companies such as the Royal Mail and Telecommunication firms but never found any interest outside of these areas. All this changed in the 1980’s and a new level of enthusiasm gained momentum until today when a good Series I is the most desirable of all Land Rover in every facet of motoring.

The Land Rover long wheelbase made an ideal tow vehicle with its 4x4 go anywhere capability and as such as was very popular with all the recovery services of the 1950’s including as seen here, the RAC. Decorated in the livery of the Radio Rescue Fleet this was one of the first RAC vehicles to have and orange beacon and aerial.

This is a real nostalgic delight, a Radio Rescue RAC Land Rover, from back in the days when the RAC vehicles were in blue and didn’t look like a paramedics services. The old fashioned RAC diamond logo is well done – and particularly neat on the front wings. The headboard is a nice touch, and tiny touches like the picked out door handles, miniature Land Rover badges, glazed headlights and sliding windows bar make it a real treat.
