MAISTO 1/18 - PORSCHE PANAMERA TURBO

2011 Porsche Panamera Turbo Grey Diecast Car Model 1/18 by Maisto

The Panamera divided Porsche fans due to its obvious family man benefits, but if you like the design this replica should appeal, its gun-metal paint is well-applied, every door opens except those for the two passengers, and the interior detail is convincing. the engine also looks good despite being a one-piece moulding.

MAISTO 1/18 PORSCHE CAYENNE TURBO SILVER

This is one of the most impressive models I've seen from Maisto. They are a difficult company to fully figure out- often their products have ranked as average at best, but they are more than capable of performing real quality works, as this model shows. Built in Thailand and released in a glossy metallic silver paint with tan interior, this model of the Cayenne is 1:18th of the real thing. It weighs something over a pound, is about 10.5 inches long and 4 inches wide.

Functionality: the driver's and front passenger's door open, and while the hinges squeak something awful on mine, the doors are more securely mounted than I've seen on some models. The hood and rear liftgate open as well. The hinges on those are a bit stiff, somewhat like the doors, but again all these moving parts are mounted pretty well. Also to be considered is the fact that because all the opening parts are a bit stiff, they don't swing open and shut whenever they feel like it, and you don't have to do anything to make them stay open. Now, the rear passenger doors, left and right, do not open.

Appearances: this model looks realistic, just as it should. The underside, hood, interior, and exterior all have a remarkable look and feel of quality and detail to them. Maisto's Cayenne also has a certain sharpness to its appearances. Taut, well-made. Just like the German automobile it replicates.

Understand, of course, that this is not meant to be a toy. Something more simple, and durable, would probably be better if that's the kind of use you have in mind. But this Cayenne could probably hold up well if treated with care, even as a toy. Just don't get careless and break it. Know it's a model first and foremost. This is a quality model, and certainly more durable than some models I've come across. Prices aren't too bad, either, from what I've seen. This is definitely one of Maisto's better works. --Alan Edward Creager "Master & Commander") Shop here

MAISTO 1/18 PORSCHE 550A SPYDER DIECAST MODEL

Surely one of the most aesthetically pleasing cars ever built, the Porsche 550 A Spyder looks great in black with red upholstery. This detailed 1:18-scale replica has an exceptionally solid metal body. Although the detailing is plastic, there's not much of it on this pared-down fun machine. The steering wheel actually turns the front wheels, and the doors, hood, and rear compartment can be opened, the latter revealing engine, leather tool bag, and spare wheel. All four wheels have independent suspension springs. The car comes on a black, fake-wood display stand, but you can easily remove the two screws for some stylish, open-air motoring around your floor or desktop. --Richard Farr

SCHUCO 1:18 PORSCHE 356 A SPEEDSTER SILVER

The Porsche 356 was the company's first production automobile. It was a lightweight and nimble 2-door sports car available as coupe and convertible. Production started in 1948 in Austria and in 1950 the factory relocated to Germany. In 1955, after numerous changes, the 356A was introduced. Production continued until April 1965. Little noticed at its inception, the first 356s sold primarily in Europe, but by the early 1950s the 356 had gained renown among enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic. Like its cousin, the VW Beetle, the 356 was a four-cylinder, air-cooled, rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive car utilizing unitized pan and body construction. While the 356's body was an original design by Porsche, its engine, suspension and chassis were derived from the Beetle. However, Porsche quickly re-engineered and refined the car so by the late '50s many fewer parts were shared. Cabriolets were offered from the start, and in the early 1950s sometimes comprised over 50% of total production. One of the most desirable collector models is the 356 Speedster, introduced in late 1954. With its raked windshield, bucket seats and minimal folding top, the Speedster was an instant hit, especially in Southern California. Buy it now

CMC 1/18 PORSCHE 901 COUPE, 1964 CHAMPAIGN YELLOW LIMITED EDITION

On the 12th of September in 1963, Porsche introduced the Type 901 as the successor of the Porsche 356 at the IAA in Frankfurt. Just one year later, with the 901 poised to go into series production, it was presented to the public eye again at the Parisian Autosalon. Peugeot intervened, because they owned the copyright for all three digit model designations with a 0 in the middle. But before Porsche was able to make the amends, production of the Type 901 had already got off the ground on September 14, 1964, and a total of 82 units were delivered by the factory. All of them carried the type designation 901. Subsequently, the 901 became the 911, a legendary 3-digit designation that still raises the heartbeat of every sports car enthusiast. Back in the 1950’s, Porsche was rethinking the configuration of car bodies. A final design was developed by his son Ferdinand Alexander. Based on an aesthetics that emphasized clear and simple beauty, he worked out a line management that was fully in tune with the spirit of the 60s. Ferry Porsche was succinct, when he said later: "This type shaped the unique character of all Porsche sports cars." Even little boys started to dream of owning a 911 in the future. Those who were unable to afford one eventually, had received at least a miniature as a birthday present, and the treasured gift tended to be assigned a place of honor on their rack. By now the 901, or the subsequent 911, has won an established spot in the sports car Olympus. To those that are still dreaming, and essentially to all model fans, CMC now offers the 901 in a most faithful and gorgeously-crafted replication. It is composed of 971 single parts. Finally the Porsche 901 has a miniature that does justice to its original and unparalleled beauty. Buy it now

MAISTO 1948 PORSCHE NO.1 TYPE 356

When Maisto puts "Special Edition" on something, they're not just blowing exhaust fumes. It used to be that this Porsche No. 1 Typ 356 Roadster could only be owned by the fabulously wealthy, but now you can have one too. Sure, it's a bit smaller--in 1:18 scale the car measures about 8 by 2.5 inches--but it's lost none of its elegance in the miniaturization process. Pop the back hood to reveal a remarkable engine replica, not to mention a spare tire and a tool kit. Pop the trunk to find a spacious luggage compartment. Open either door to get to the steering wheel, which controls the movement of the rubber front wheels. You may be so entranced with this Porsche you'll be tempted to buy a real one. The box says for ages 3 and up, but unless your 3-year-old has a fine appreciation for automobiles the model craftsmanship here will go unnoticed. The collector, however, will recognize it immediately. --Keith Simanton

BEGINNING OF THE PORSCHE DYNASTY - 1950 PORSCHE 356

Dr. Ferdinand Porsche is the legendary engineer who is best remembered today but it was his son Ferry who gets the credit for the development of the Porsche 356. While his father was serving a 2-year jail term for the crime of developing the VW Beetle for Hitler, Ferry decided to build a sports car using the Beetle's engine, suspension and transmission. The first 356, the number came from it being the 356th design project for Porsche since its start in 1930, was made in Austria in 1947. In 1950 Porsche opened up its first German factory in Zuffenhausen. This also marked the first steel-bodied 356.

Although production in 1950 was only 410, this was the start of the Porsche dynasty. In 1951 the Carrera followed and the rest is history. The 356 was not easy to drive as it put a lot of pressure on parts that were built for the slower moving Beetle, but it was from these humble beginnings that a sports car dynasty was built.
