THE WINNING PRINCE

Author by Wiwat Chang

Thailand was to have had its first top level race – the Bangkok Grand Prix – way back on December 10, 1939, when Prince Chula Chakrabonsge successfully pitched the idea to the prime minister of the time.

Having won the BRDC Road Racing Gold Star for three consecutive years from 1936 and 1938, Prince Chula’s cousin – Prince Birabongse Bhanutej Bhanubandh, better known as Prince Bira – was set to be the star local attraction.

But things were disrupted with the outbreak early in the year of World War Two, and the plans had to be scrapped.

It was not until 1988 that the Bangkok Grand Prix was actually held as a memorial exhibition drive in Bangkok, and as an historic race at Bira Circuit with MR Narisa Chakrabongse – Prince Chula’s daughter – driving Prince Bira’s most successful car, Romulus, among dozens of participants.

Prince Bira won 16 Grand Prix events between 1935 and 1938 including the 1936 Coupe du Prince Rainier, which later became known as the Monaco Grand Prix.

After the war he continued grand prix racing between 1950 and 1955 but managed to win only the non-championship New Zealand Grand Prix in 1955.

Prince Bira was the son of Rama V, King Chulalongkorn. He was born on July 15, 1914, in Bangkok and was sent to boarding school in England under the care of Prince Chula, who spotted his driving talent and first entered him in a race in 1935.

During the war years, Prince Bira was a glider instructor with the Royal Air Force. After his motor racing days, he represented Thailand at the summer Olympics in yachting in 1956, 1960, 1964 and 1972, and was instrumental in having the Varuna Club in Pattaya host a World Championship yacht race in 1978.

He passed away of a heart attack on December 23, 1985, in a London tube station.
His achievements in motor racing and sailing are honoured by the Bira International Circuit and the annual Prince Bira Memorial Regatta.

When the inaugural Bang Saen Thailand Festival of Speed was held last year, a temporary shrine was erected in his honour and will be reopened this year within the street circuit. Thailand no longer has a grand prix driver, so let this image of Prince Bira remind us that without perseverance, success can be elusive.

1979 POINTAC FIREBIRD TRANS-AM

The Pontiac Firebird was built by the Pontiac division of General Motors between 1967 and 2002. The Firebird was introduced the same year as its platform-sharing cousin, the Chevrolet Camaro. This coincided with the release of the 1967 Mercury Cougar, which shared its platform with another pony car.

The vehicles were, for the most part, powered by various V8 engines of different GM divisions. While primarily Pontiac-powered until 1977, Firebirds were built with several different engines from nearly every GM division until 1982 when all Pontiac engines were dropped in favor of corporate units.

The Pontiac Trans Am, was named for the series. Interestingly, according to SCCA archives, the car which is named for the racing series has only taken 7 wins in the 42 year old series 446 events. The last win by a Pontiac Trans Am was in 1984.

This is a very highly detailed 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am diecast model car 1:18 scale die cast by Yat Ming, opening doors and hood, mounted on plastic stand. See more.

FISHERMAN'S WHARF 1920 MACK AC

If you’ve ever been to San Francisco, you know that one spot everyone recommends is Fisherman’s Wharf. Renowned for both its beauty and savory seafood. Fisherman’s Wharf is the place where the city’s many fishermen dock their boats. In the course of a year, these intrepid seafarers bring in millions of pounds of fresh rock cod, sole, salmon, herring and a variety of shellfish. You can even buy fresh crab and shrimp cocktails from street vendors who cook the just-caught shellfish in metal kettles right there on the side walk. Now the spirit of fisherman’s Wharf is captured in an intricate replica of a 1920 MACK AC delivery truck with a full load of fish—including crabs and clams. This replica captures a vehicle built by Mack Trucks, Inc., the famous truck manufacturer whose roots date back to 1900. The company was born when two Mack brothers took over the Fallesen wagon factory in Brooklyn, New York. The company quickly progressed from making horse-drawn wagons to motorized buses. In 1905, Mack Trucks moved to Allentown, Pennsylvania which soon became known as “the truck capital of the world.” Mack trucks were soon respected around the world for their toughness and reliability. Now portrayed carrying a fresh catch from Fisherman’s Wharf to a San Francisco restaurant, your model is produced by and available only from Matchbox Collectibles.

WHAT IS A TREASURE HUNT?

A Treasure Hunt Car is a series car just like all the others. There are 12 cars per series year, one for each month of the year. Some of these Treasure Hunt cars have synthetic tires and look much different than the other series cars and make them more appealing to collector. These cars are on cards just like the other series cars and have series banners just like all the others. The one thing that make them really stand out is that they have either a dollar sign "$" on them or a picture of a treasure chest along with the series banner has always been he color green. You know, the same color as money

At first, these cars were very limited in production. In 1995, they were released with a production run of 10,000 for each car. This number was printed in the upper left-hand corner of the face of the card. With production numbers being that low, they were indeed a treasure to find and worth all the commotion they created.

In 1996, the production number was increased to 25,000 for each car, giving the collector a better chance of finding them. This number was also printed on the face of the card. This was the last year any production numbers were printed on the cards. It seems as time went on, the production numbers have increased and are not released to the public anymore. 1961 Chrysler Imperial Crown Convertible. 1:18 scale diecast collectible model car, 12"L x 4.5"W x 3"H die cast convertible. Includes: 24K gold plated coin and certificate of authenticity. Road signature series. Manufactured by Yat Ming; 20138 in white color. Individually packed in a window box.

"Excellent product. I collect 1:18 cars (collection of 70+, all brands and makes) and this is one of the two or three best ones I have. And the others cost 90 or 100 dollars apiece. AN ABSOLUTE STEAL!!!! Better quality than many AutoArt I own that cost 3 or 4 times as much! The windows go up and down, the sun visors flip, the rear center armrest flips down, the front seats flip, the antenna goes up and down. All of this with a thick (for a model car) carpet, amazing detail, and real hinges on the hood (not arms). Compare at other sites for up to 3 times the cost, and this car is an all-around steal. MONTE CARLO RALLY SET

From a tiny, cheeky, bizarre looking ‘people car’ invented by design genius Alec Issigonis in the early1960s, the Mini was developed into one of the major sporting sensations of this century. Its capability of embarrassing much bigger machinery in races and rellies captured the imagination of the people like no car before or since.

The Cooper Car Company Ltd., owned by John Cooper, was formed in 1947. In 1961, after official collaboration with the BMC, the first Mini Cooper was announced. This sporting version recognized by its II horizontal grille bars, had a twin-carburettor engine giving 55bph and a top speed of 85mph. Later Cooper ‘S’ variants featured the famous 1275cc. 75bhp engine which had a top speed of 100mph. By the time Cooper’s agreement with MBC lapsed, in August 1971, 145, 493 Cooper Minis had been built the last in July 1971.

During the 1960s, the Mini Cooper dominated the international rallying scene and the Monte Carlo Rally was the most glamourous event of the year. This superb 2-piece set features possibly the most famous Minis of all time, Mini Cooper S 33 EJB, driven to victory by Hopkirk and Lidden in the Monte Carlo Rally of 1964 and Mini Cooper S AJB 44B, driven to victory in the Monte Carlo Rally by Makinen and Easter the following year in 1965.

Each model is made to exact 1:43 scale and produced in England by Lledo PLC. This is to certify that this Monte Carlo Rally Minis Set comprising of two Rally Mini Coopers is one of a special limited edition of 3,000 sets only. Each set is individually numbered.

1955 VOLKSWAGEN KAFER BEETLE

The worldwide sales in excess of 21 million Beetles have given rise, over time, to a multiplicity of body modifications and numerous model variants. How-ever, prominent features such as its rounded shape have been retained. Thus, the year 1970 marked a turning point in Beetle product policy. With the completely redesigned type 1302 (1.2 and 1.3 litre engine) and 1302 S (1.6 litre version) a completely new line was created. The 1971 model has, as standard, the semi-trailing arm rear suspension that became familiar on the automatic version, giving it a technically extravagant chassis. In addition the greater height of the engine required a more marked curve to the bonnet. The new horizontally opposed 1584 cc engine with twin port cylinder head delivers a good 50 bhp, giving the 1302 S tremendous tractive power. The redesigned front conceals a transverse arm and spring strut type suspen-sion. The new front axle with McPherson struts has enabled the boot space to be increased to a proud 260 litres. Another attractive external feature had also appeared: an extra vent behind the rear side window. At 870 kg, the light-weight 1302 S offered a top speed of 130 km/h. Apart from the fact that the 1302 S was the most comfortable Beetle so far, this model was crowned with yet another success: on 17.02.1972 the 15,007,034th Beetle, a 1302 S, rolled off the line. The world record for the best-selling car ever, previously held by the legendary Ford T model, had been broken. See more.

ERTL - 1970 PLYMOUTH SUPERBIRD LIMITED EDITION

Ertl's Bright Green 1970 Plymouth Superbird first appeared on the market about 2001. At that time, collectors and Superbird enthusiasts rushed to secure one. These cars have been difficult to find since those early days. Ertl's is a superb rendering of this automotive classic. The manufacturer has spared no effort in producing this mighty muscle car replica. The precision interior detailing is surpassed only by Ertl's exacting exterior presentation. The doors open wide, the hood raises over an accurately portrayed Mopar power plant (440 cid), and the steering wheel turns the front wheels (an Ertl trademark). The decals are exact (and properly located) giving the car the feeling of quality. Initial review of the car generates only appreciation for Ertl and its dedication to preserving the Roadrunner Superbird legend. Ertl's Green Superbird has almost doubled in price since its release. (An orange edition was offered after the Green Bird about 2002 and will also increase quickly in value. One hopes Ertl will produce more Superbird colors, how about Chrysler's rare Panther Pink?) In appears certain that this die cast metal car has hitched a ride on the now decade long Superbird craze (all Superbird items are daily and dramatically increasing in value). This car is an excellent investment! This Sublime Lime Superbird is an brilliant gift candidate. Who wouldn't love to own a Superbird!? Get yours soon. (Review by Readalots) Buy it now.

ERTL - 1970 PLYMOUTH SUPERBIRD

Plymouth Superbird Hard Top. 1:18 scale diecast model car. 12" long x 3.75"W x 3"H die cast car with opening doors/hood/trunk, steerable front wheels, and detailed interior & chassis. Limited edition. Stand on a platform. In 1970 Plymouth introduced the Superbird. It shared many comparisons in design to the Dodge Daytona. The Superbird was based on the Plymouth Road Runner except for the unique airfoil and nose configuration. The rear spoiler on the Superbird was higher and more angled than the Daytona's. The trademark over size rear spoiler was mainly for styling but it did allow better access to the trunk but at speeds under 90 mph, the wing was essentially useless. Since production lasted only one year total build quantities were 1920 cars. The rarest for these birds is the Hemi equipment version as only 93 were built. 1,162 were equipped with the 440 and single four-barrel carburetor. 665 versions were built with the 440 Six Pack. Some of the reasons for the low production figures were the controversial oversized wing and angular nose. Also, the cartoon characters and 'beep-beep' horn were 'love-or-hate'. The Superbirds performance was undisputed and the top speed was without equal. See more.

SUNBEAM MOTORCYCLE & SIDECAR

Die-cast Matchbox Models of Yesteryear No.Y8-1914 Sunbeam Motorcycle & Sidecar, it was produced in England by Lesney in 1962. The length is 6.7 cm. Matchbox produced diecast of motorcycle side towing car only 5 patterns : Triump Sidecar, Lambretta, Harley Davidson (2 models) and Sunbeam. Before becoming Sunbeam, John Marton started with cycle manufacture, going on to produce his first car, from Wolverhampton, in 1899. Sunbeam cars came into their own from 1909, with racing success. The company merged with Talbot (and Darracq) in 1920. This was another company which was to be financially rescued by the Rootes Group.

Later the Sunbeam name was again used on its own, even when the Rootes Group became part of Chrysler. The last Sunbeam car appeared in 1976.

This die-cast 1914 Sunbeam Notorcycle & Sidecar was produced 3 models, all of them has a different chromium color. It has a black, light green and dark green seat.

PORSCHE 917K FLAT 12 CYL - MARTINI RACING

Auto Art have released futher models of the famous Porsche 917K models from the 1970 and 1971 race seasons. As mentioned previously in Pit Stop, these were available from Universal Hobbies before under the Eagle's Race brand.

These versions, though, include a higher level of finish and accuracy, but they do cost significantly more. The version that I am reviewing this month is the Martini Racing Porsche Austria works entry that took part in the 1970 Kyalamai race in South Africa, driven by Siffert/Ahrens. Finished in the 'psychedelic' style used during this season by this team. For this race the car, carying race number two, ran in yellow and red livery.

As with the former model, this model's nose section is removable showing the radiator and fluid containers sited there. The gull-wing doors each swing upwards to reveal the fully detailed interior with the austere finish of the full-size car. (Reviewed from Model Collector) See more.

This book, now in its sixth edition, offers concise history, detailed listing of major variations, chronological list, and newly updated price guide. It includes all the Dinky toys made in Britain, France, Spain, and other parts of world, from the earliest model railroad accessories to the first cars that bear the name Dinky Toys.

"This is a very handsome and useful book, in which all models made by Dinky Toys, even from Hong Kong ,are displayed in color. With exception of the airplanes and some of the extraordinary sets, the models are not photographed in detail. Much information about the models is not given (in my opinion not necessary). At the end, prices are given, but these will certainly vary depending on the state of the model and the availability of an original box. The format of the book is such, that it is very easy to take it with you in your pocket." (Reviewed by Customer) Buy Now.

LESNEY'S MATCHBOX TOY : REGULAR WHEELS

A new and most informative book for Matchbox collectors by one of America's foremost authorities. Matchbox toys are possibly the most popular collectible in America. People who grew up with die cast cars as children tend to love the toys as adults. The old toys have become scarce and variations of newer toys continue to fuel a popular passion "own each one." Enthusiasts collect not only the toys, but catalogs, collector buttons, and boxes. Pictures and text cover the major variations of the most popular series of die cast cars made by Lesney Products from 1947 to mid-1969. Included is a revised price guide and a list of organized clubs for collectors.

"I have the Superfast Years book and found it excellent, and now I bought the Regular Wheels years, I think this book it a big help for collector that are starting their first moves about collecting Matchbox toys. The price guide is accurate and there are photos of models includin King Size series, Grey wheels and Special sets. Of course, there are another books from this author that includes mores and better detailed photos, but this is perfect book for the first steps." (Reviewed by Casaza Pablo Ezequiet "book analyst")

EXCELLENT RESOURCE FOR JOHNNY LIGHTNING COLLECTORS

This book is an excellent resource for all Johnny Lightning collectors, experienced and novice. It provides much information on the history of JL and many of the nuances of collecting, manufacturing, etc. There are great color photos of many cars. Price ranges are also included as well as how to rate the condition of the cars. The only drawback I can see is there is little to no info on many of the newer cars/sets. The index is also somewhat difficult to follow, especially if you don't know what year the car was manufactured. Perhaps this will be included in the next edition? Overall, I highly recommend this book to anybody interested in Johnny Lightning collecting! (Reviewed by Gerry Bowman) See more.

A VALUABLE RESOURCE FOR THE CORGI COLLECTOR

Hop in for a complete tour of the tiny world this British toy maker created. Explore four decades of diecast production, following the route the industry took as it shed outdated techniques for state-of-the-art cars James Bond would have been proud of. Written from the unique perspective of an American collector, the book presents topics never before discussed in print, chronicling the rise, fall, and rebirth of Corgi Toys, all illustrated with hundreds of color photos of models and memorabilia never before seen in print. The smaller Husky and Corgi Juniors lines, often neglected in other books, are also covered. Other sections examine Corgi clubs, marketing, packaging, memorabilia, and special interest groupings. Most importantly, this encylopedia presents the most complete variation listing and value guide published to date, including sections covering Corgi, Husky, and Juniors models from their introduction through the present day.

"This is a wonderful guide for anyone who is into collecting Corgi toys. I especially enjoyed the value guide in the back even though this book was published 10 years ago.My only disappointment was that the author didn't put more information about the "Character" cars which I am so fond of collecting.
