Shifting through the ashes of World War II, Mercedes Benz found uts was left with the tooling for only its 170 model its mass market car. Although still sporting the pre-war body styles, the 1950 170S and its sister, the 170D, with its diesel engine, showed the progress the company was making to reclaim its right to be called on the world's best automakers. The performances of both engines were boosted by an increase in displacement. Meanwhile, handling and safety were improved by the addition of telescopic shock absorbers, a wider rear axle track and the use of more effective brakes. Comfort was not neglected, either, with seats enlarged and the interior of the passenger compartment widened. Access to the trunk was also improved and molding was added to the front windows to protect passengers from drafts. The post-war 170 models were finally retired in 1955 with 153,475 built.

SCHUCO 1:43 MERCEDES-BENZ 170V WOOD FUELED


Bio fuels are nothing new. In the fuel-starved Germany of the 30’s and 40’s, “wood gasification” generators were fitted to cars when gasoline wasn’t available. This novel model replicates the burner affixed to the rear of a Mercedes-Benz 170 sedan, with plumbing to the front part of the device that fuels the engine. SCHUCO 1/32 MERCEDES-BENZ TRAC 1800 TRACTOR




The MB Trac was developed by Mercedes-Benz from their Unimog truck platform. Mercedes built Trac’s from 1973 to1991 in a variety of configurations, and has since sold the design to another German company that continues to build them. The Unimog truck was originally intended as an agricultural platform, so in the early ‘70s Daimler Benz evolved the design into the MB Trac, aimed at larger scale farming. The new tractor crossed the Unimog technology of all-wheel drive and a robust power transmission to four large equal-sized wheels, with the appearance of a tractor: slim hood, with an angular, elevated driver cab. From the initial MB Trac, a broad product range developed, culminating in the heavy duty MT Trac 1800 Intercooler with 180 hp engine. When Daimler Benz ended production in 1991, 41,000 vehicles were produced, of which 30,000 are still in service. Buy it now

SIKU 1/55 MERCEDES 'FAUN' REFUSE TRUCK


This is a very nice model of a Mercedes Benz-mounted 'Faun' refuse truck. The 'business end' of the model has a revolving 'compactor', lifting rear end, sliding inner wall, tipping body and, of course, a 'wheelie' bin. It has great 'play' value and it really quite good looking -change the plastic wheels and do a little judicious detailing and this could pass for a much more expensive diecast. Shop here

CMC 1/18 MERCEDES-BENZ 300 SLR MILLE MIGLIA #722, 1955






In 1955 Mercedes-Benz introduced its 300 SLR for the first time at the Mille Miglia. Among its strongest competitors were Ferrari, Maserati, and Aston Martin. Every minute a competing car got its starting clearance. Since 1949 the starting order had been decided by lot so that each starting number was a record of the starting time. The young-but-well-accomplished British race driver Stirling Moss, together with his co-pilot Denis Jenkinson (“Jenks”), received the starting number 722. It means that their exact starting time was 7:22 am. What an unforgettable race they presented that day. Denis Jenkinson invented the so-called Roller Map, a sort of “navigation system“ that would become a part of racing history. This Roller Map was a six-meter paper roll with details of the track information collected during the training sessions. As a result, he was able to give his pilot very exact tips. Thanks to his driving skills, his will to win, and the reliability of his 300 SLR, Stirling Moss already took the lead in Rome. After 10 hours, 17 minutes and 48 seconds, the duo of Moss and Jenkinson crossed the finishing line to become the victors. They reached an unbelievable average speed of 157.65 km/h. An unparalleled record for a long time to come. J.M. Fangio, also driving a 300 SLR, finished 2nd to complete a sweet dual triumph of the Mercedes-Benz. 1:18 1938 MERCEDES BENZ 770K CABRIOLET


The 1938 Mercedes Benz 770 SK Pullman limo was the first Grand Mercedes to feature an oval tubular frame, independent suspension and hydraulic brakes. This evolutionary 770 was strtched 40 centimeters to 6 meters in length, its wheelbase was 3.88 meters. Since its debut in the autumn of 1930 at the Paris Automobile Show, the sensational appointments and exquisite finish helped the 770 to find itself in the fleets of many aristocratic courts and government leaders around the world. It was big and sold for big money (the price was equivalent to that of a single-family home in Germany). When equipped with armor plating (a much requested option as those who rode inside became less popular), the vehicle weighed as much as 4,800 kilograms, which required a supercharger to be added to the straight-eight 7.6 liter engine, boosting the motor's outoput to 230 horsepower. By 1938, the supercharger had become standard equipment and could produce a top speed of 170 kilometers per hour; however, the armored versions were limited to 80 km/h because of the bulletproof cell-type tires. The 190SL (Sports & Light) intentionally resembled a scaled-down 300SL roadster, complete with horizontal grille, wheelwell "eyebrows," and alloy doors, hood and trunk. In 1955, the 190SL was priced at $3,998, a bit less than half the cost of a 300SL. It was promoted as a sports-touring car as opposed to a true sports car primarily due to limited power. The 190SL enjoyed an eight-year lifespan from 1955-1963, with remarkably few changes to the original 1955 design.

The Mercedes-Benz 300SL was introduced in 1954 with distinctive gull-wing doors. It was the fastest production car of its day and was based on the company's highly successful competition sports car of 1952. Intended for US customers in the booming post-war market, it was introduced at the 1954 New York Auto Show. The 300 referred to the engine's three liter cylinder displacement and SL stood for Sport Leicht (sport light). The 300SL was best known for both its distinctive gull wing doors as well as being the first gasoline-powered car equipped with direct fuel injection. The 300SL Gull Wing was produced from 1955 to 1957 and more than 80% of the car's total production was sold in the US. The 300SL is credited for changing the company's image in America. The 300SL's body was mainly steel, except for the aluminum hood, doors and trunk lid. The engine, canted left to lower the hood, was a 3.0 liter inline six, fitted with a Bosch mechanical direct fuel injection system. This innovation allowed a top speed of 161 mph. Today, the 300SL is considered one of the most collectible Mercedes-Benz models of all time, with prices reaching well past $650,000.

MAISTO 1/18 SCALE - MERCEDES CLK-GTR


Following the release of the 1977 ‘works’ AMG and Person Motorsports models of the Mercedes CLK-GTR, the 1998 Champions, gained by victory a the last race, were Klaus Ludwig and Ricardo Zonta, who beat the favourites Bernd Schneider and Mark Webber to the title. The car shown is the Schneider/webber car with racing number 1. When first raced at Le Mans, the car was a dismal failure, retiring early after a fast start; the decision to race at the French circuit proved to be an error.The model has opening doors and removable rear bodywork. The interior of the driver’s cockpit reveals plenty of detail, including all the knobs and dials. The rear body shows engine internals, full suspension detail and engine wiring, which, for a model of this size and cost, represents good value for money. MINICHAMPS 1/43 MERCEDES 350 SL CABRIOLET


The Mercedes 350 SL cabriolet hard top is a truly excellent model from Minichamps. A quick glance shows this to be very fine: a closer examination reveals just what high standards can be achieved these days in die-cast.

When you examine the model, note how thin is the casting, particularly important where the roof meets the windows. Note that the windows are flush, yet there appears no unsightly ridges of plastic. The wheels are superbly portrayed. The light clusters both front and rear are excellent. The interior looks perfect with all the dashboard detail, door handles, and so on, picked out in blue mettalic. The windscreen wipers, rear view mirror and wing mirrors are all seperate fittings.

The long wheelbase Mercedes 600 Pullman is the well-known 1970s flagship of the mercedes limousine fleet, and both in closed and landaulet forms has served many world leader including the Shah of Persia, Pope Johannes Paul II and Pope Paul VI. Most state visits to West Germany in the early '70s used such vehicles, including that of Queen Elizabeth II. (Leonid Brezhnev, however, settled for a short wheelbase 600!)

THE ELEGANT CMC 1:18 MERCEDES W25


In 1934, following the recession years, Daimler-Benz staged a comeback to the international racing scene with the W25. Designed to the 750 kg formular the W25 had an 8-cylinder in-line supercharged engine and two pressure carburetors. The original capacity and output of 3.36 litres and 354 hp were increased in 1936 to 4.7 litres and 480 hp respectively. The Mercedes team scored 16 international victories with the W 25 between 1934 and 1936, Rudoff Caracciola winning the European and German championship titles in 1935.

Mercedes-Benz 770 "Grand Mercedes" built from 1930 to 1938, armour-plated, pullman saloon, 8 cylinders, output at 2800/min: 150 hp. Formerly the property of the Japanese Imperial family, this "Grand Mercedes" returned in September 1971 to Untertürk-heim. The car has dark red paintwork and bears the emblem of the Tenno on doors. Together with two other cars of the same model it was in regular service during its time a the Imperial court.
