K17 - FORD D800 ARTICULATED LOW LOADER WITH BULLDOZER

This model released the Matchbox King-Size K-17 Ford D800 Articulated Low Loader with Case Bulldozer in 1970. The tractor and trailer were always painted green all over except for the yellow fuel tanks which when lifted would uncouple the tractor unit from the trailer. The baseplate was silver painted and it included the grille as part of the casting which meant it did not need silver trim. The cab was fitted with green tinted plastic windows and it had a red roof beacon. Both tractor and trailer were fitted with red plastic hubs with black plastic tyres which included a spare wheel mounted to the top of trailer.

The bulldozer had a red painted body with a yellow baseplate which included the engine and dozer blade as part of the casting. It also had yellow plastic rollers and a removable yellow metal cab roof and it was fitted with green rubber tracks which were replaced by black rubber tracks on the later issues. Both the the Tractor unit and the Bulldozer had decals for 'Laing' but later 'Taylor Woodrow' decals were fitted including extra decals applied to the back of the tractor cab and to the back of the Bulldozer cab.

MATCHBOX KING-SIZE K-1 O&K HYDRAULIC EXCAVATOR

This model is Matchbox King-Size K-1 O&K Hydraulic Excavator. It had a red body with a silver grey Jib, red plastic hubs with black plastic tyres and the cab had amber tinted windows. The jib had no less than three hydrosleeves keeping the jib in position and the Jib had red and white 'MH6' labels while the sides of the cab had a red and white label with 'O&K' inside a diamond shape. The model was converted to superfast wheels in 1971. It kept it's red & silver grey from the regular wheeled model but the superfast issue can be found with red and white or yellow and black 'O&K' labels and amber or clear windows. The earliest design for the O&K Excavator had only two hydrosleeves as the two upper parts of the jib were cast as one piece. It is not known weather any of these one piece jibs actually got into circulation.

THE TAYLOR JUMBO CRANE

The Taylor Jumbo Crane (11c) replaced the ERF Petrol Tanker in June. It was usually found in all-over yellow with a red double chain hook. When the weight box was painted red, a few hooks appeared with single chains in either red or yellow plastic.
The jib was subject to a number of casting changes. These centered upon the top and bottom lattice work which originally was cast open but this gap was later closed. The final jib version included a small cross brace between the top plates.

A King size version, also in plain yellow, was released at the same time. The miniature model was available for five years before it was replaced in April 1969 by the Scaffolding Truck.

MATCHBOX ACCESSORY PACK NO.2 THE BEDFORD CAR TRANSPORTER

Accessory Pack No.2, released in 1957, was an articulated Bedford Car Transporter. This model was able to carry four Matchbox cars, two on the lower deck and two on the upper. In these early days of Matchbox toys there were no hinged deck or ramps, so there was no obvious way of loading and unloading cars on the upper deck. The Bedford Car Transporter is the most interesting of the Matchbox Accessory Packs as far as variations are concerned, not least because it exists in a rare colour version and was also the Accessory pack model which had the longest production run (and therefore more opportunity for variations).

The first version had metal wheels fifted in common with other Matchbox vehicles of the time, although the wheels were larger than those fiftted to any other model, excepting the Yesteryear series. The sides of the transporter trailer were decorated with the words “Matchbox” Car Transporter’ applied with a printing process unlike other Matchbox models (which had decals at this time). Earlier issues had the lettering much wider spaced than later versions, the overall length being 50mm rather than 37mm.

MATCHBOX KINGSIZE - RACING CAR TRANSPORTER

The model we are unable to identify is a racing car transporter and, as it was produced by Matchbox Toys, we can assumed it to be modeled on a British Major Pack series it later became Kingsize model number K5 at a stated scale of 1/54th. The model has no mention of the vehicle make is made on the model or on the packaging. It is similar in design to the Corgi Toys (Commer based) Ecurie Ecosse racing car transporter and, like the Corgi model, the Matchbox transporter also features a two-tier loading system. Painted overall in mid-green with ‘glass’ roof panels, the model carried ‘Racing Transporter’ decals with a ‘BP’ shield and checkered flag. Alongside the BP sign are the names of four famous motor racing circuits. The model was never issued with racing car so on ‘team’ connections can be made, although various catalogue illustration show Ferrari 156 cars being loaded/unloaded.

CAR TRANSPORTER

Car transporter directly benefit the private; they reduce delivery costs and the risk of accidental damage en route and they ensure that the customer himself can “run-in” his new car from the start. Motor manufactures use them to deliver to their distributors and the docks; distributors use them to supply their area dealers. Nearly all transporters are articulated so that there is always a fresh load of four, six or eight car waiting for the first available tractor. Car delivery companies often operate Ford D tractors because their range of engines match the differing transporter sizes. The semi-trailers use both hydraulic and mechanical power to operate the loading ramp and fold the upper deck when the unit is returning empty to base. (~Corgi Juniors Collectors Album)

REFUSE TRUCK

K-7 Refuse Truck

Efficient refuse collection is vital to the health, as well as to the attraction of our cities. In recent years, many household items have been made available in easily disposable packs, cartons or aerosols, adding somewhat to the chores of the dustman and presenting a new problem to the vehicle designer. Today, household refuse loaded into the vehicle by mechanical means and then compressed in the lorry by a plate moving towards the bulkhead. Shelvoke and Drewry have been in the business for many years and their vehicles are employed by many municipalities. Of light alloy construction, the body tips the refuse at he final disposal site. FIRST VEHICLE IN MAJOR PACKS

The Majors Packs were introduced as a new series in 1957 as a companion to the 1-75 series in a larger scale. As the King Size series was introduced three years later, the Major Packs were slowly fade out and some were merged into the King-Size range. By 1967, the series had ended.

The first vehicle in the Major Pack series was the Caterpillar DW20 Earth Scraper. It was to be one of 15 vehicles in the line. The underside of the tractor was marked "Made in England No.1 by Lesney" and the sides were marked with "CAT DW20". This line of Major Pack vehicles was the forerunner of the King and Super King range.
